HOT WEATHER SAFETY

The heat can complicate safety concerns.  Heat related injuries and illnesses affect your workers and productivity.  Experts recommend drinking plenty of liquids at regular intervals in order to stay sufficiently hydrated and maintain a safe body temperature.  This puts less strain on the cardiovascular system and can lead to fewer heat related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Here are some quick prevention tips for keeping healthy and safe in hot weather:

  • Drink fluid before, during, and after physical labor.
  • Anticipate, and adjust to, conditions that will increase the need for liquids; humidity, PPE needed, difficulty of work, and ventilation.
  • Keep cool water within easy reach of work areas at all times.
  • Drink cool water because it is absorbed more quickly and is easier to drink than hot or very cold fluids.
  • Try carbohydrate/electrolyte drinks to avoid heat cramps.
  • Avoid drinks with caffeine and never drink alcohol while working.
  • Provide ventilation to dilute hot air and increase air circulation.
  • Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat emergencies.

NEW TEST STANDARDS FOR FIRE & SMOKE DAMPERS

On July 1, 2002, damper manufactures will be required to provide fire, smoke and combination fire/smoke dampers that are tested to new Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing requirements.

The new test standards mandate significantly more stringent testing in order for the damper to qualify to obtain the UL label as approved or qualified for a specification.  The results of the implementation of these new standards can result in potential problems for specifiers and contractors.

Email us if you would like a copy of the new UL Test Standards or a comparison summary of the new and old UL Test Standards.
